Pettapiece Raises Veteran's Issue In Legislature

Perth Wellington Conservative MPP Randy Pettapiece is the latest to weigh in on the issue surrounding 90-year-old Stratford veteran Art Boon, his son and a liberation ceremony in the Netherlands.

In a question today to Premier Kathleen Wynne, Pettapiece asked the premier to look into the matter before Friday when the Boons' flight is scheduled to leave.

Wynne appeared to sympathize with the Boons, but says it was a decision for the Avon Maitland District School Board.

Still, Wynne agreed to discuss the issue with Education Minister Liz sandals.

The amount of publicity generated by the board's decision to deny a request for a leave of absence to a teacher forced the board to go public earlier this week with the reasons for the decision.

Board Director Ted Doherty says a Stratford teacher had asked for the leave to accompany his father, but noted the board has granted several similar requests to the teacher previously with the understanding that a request granted last year would be the last one.
