Safety Concerns Over Model Planes At Goderich Airport

The Town of Goderich is working on a formal agreement with the Sky Harbour Modellors Club that would allow the club to continue flying model planes at the airport.

Safety concerns had recently been brought to Goderich council's attention.

The club's past-president Jeff Squire explained that most of the safety concerns involve drones rather than model planes, and the difference is that drones can be flown beyond the vision of the operator, which creates an element of risk at an airport.

The model planes cannot be flown beyond the site of the operator and therefore the operator would be able to see any incoming aircraft. Squire adds it is standard practice for club members to bring their models down whenever a plane is in the area.

He believes a formal agreement would be beneficial for both the town and his club.
