Public Elementary School Teachers Begin Work to Rule Locally

Public school elementary teachers begin phase one of strike action today.   The labour action affects all Ontario English public school boards.

Teachers will be in their classrooms, but they will not be carrying out administrative duties like E-Q-A-O testing and adding comments to report cards.

The Elementary Teachers' Federation of Ontario says voluntary extra-curricular activities and scheduled field trips will continue for the duration of the work-to-rule.

Avon Maitland District School Board's Director Ted Doherty says programming will continue, and it's business as usual.

Doherty says they are hopeful that through collective bargaining, the outstanding issues will be resolved and the job action will end before it enters another phase.

Bluewater District School Board chair Ron Motz says students will not notice much of a change at this point.  He is hoping the dispute is settled soon, because Motz says a strike is not good for anyone - local teachers or students or parents.
