Owen Sound Area Bus Drivers Issue Strike Notice

Unifor is now warning that First Student School Bus Drivers in Owen Sound and Wiarton areas along with Owen Sound transit drivers, could strike beginning Sunday.

The 110 drivers with Local 4268 will strike if they don't have a new contract deal by then.

Unifor says bargaining is very difficult because of the Province's Request for Proposals process, which puts pressure on operators to keep compensation low to win new routes.

Unifor calls it a race to the bottom for compensation and abandoned bus routes.

Meantime, Unifor members have ratified a new contract for drivers along the Lake Huron Shoreline in the Port Elgin and Kincardine area for Bluewater District School Board, and Bruce Power.

The 65 drivers ratified a 3 year deal just before midnight which is retroactive to September 2014. It includes wage increases of 2 per cent in each of the first two years, and 1.5 per cent in the third year
