Waterfront Trail Possibly Coming To Lake Huron

Plans for a proposed Lake Huron Waterfront Trail are beginning to take shape.

Ausable Bayfield Conservation Authority Supervisor Kate Monk explains the trail is being promoted by the Ontario Waterfront Regeneration Trust with the help of local agencies.

She points out waterfront trails can be along the shoreline or can be on secondary roads that run parallel to the shoreline as has been done along the Lake Erie shoreline.

Monk says the planning for the Lake Huron trail is in the preliminary stages with the first stage beginning near the St. Clair River and running north to Port Franks and the easy part of that would be getting the trail to Grand Bend because the Rotary Trail that already extends from Grand Bend to the Pinery Provincial Park.

Monk says the trail will go as far as funding permits and they're still in the very early stages of finding that funding. She explains they're looking to local municipalities and hiking groups to determine the level of interest and that level of interest will dictate how form the trail goes. She adds the process will follow the model used by the Ontario Waterfront Regenerization Trust in creating similar trails along Lake Ontario and then Lake Erie.
