Central Huron Water Rates To Rise

Central Huron's water and wastewater rates are going up.

Council voted in favour of a two per cent increase in the rates.

Mayor Jim Ginn explains the municipality is facing a lot of expenses right now, including re-doing the sewage treatment plant. And because is strictly user-pay with no tax money to support the service the fees have to cover the costs.

Ginn adds with aging infrastructure there's always a concern about the amount of money available to cover maintenance.

When they have to dig up a road, they usually repair water and sewer lines at that time, and they have to raise money through fees to cover those costs.
