Bluewater Staff Prepare Tree Protection Plan

Bluewater council has asked staff to come up with a recommendation for a policy that would help protect trees in the municipality.

Mayor Tyler Hessel says the immediate concerns is a heritage tree in front of the Red Pump Restaurant on the Main St. in Bayfield. The tree is believed to be the oldest Slippery Elm Tree in Ontario, and has significant heritage status.

The tree is very close to the sidewalk and the road and has very little to protect it from contact with vehicles.

Hessel says, in the past, the municipality has not had a very effective maintenance program for its trees, but he feels it's time to develop one.
