Birds Delay Walkerton Soccer Park Construction

Brockton’s proposed $1.3-million soccer complex at East Ridge Business Park in Walkerton has stalled because of nesting birds.

A recent assessment found the current hay fields are home to Bobolink and Eastern Meadowlark habitat.

Mayor David Inglis says they have to wait for the birds to finish nesting before proceeding.

"As soon as that is done near the end of July, we can begin," Inglis tells CKNX News. "We're going to set an early council meeting in order to approve the tender and review the fundraising plan."

Meanwhile, Brockton council was presented with a motion to award the tender at this week's meeting, but decided to wait for more information regarding the funding plan for the project.

Staff had initially proposed the cost of the project be split equally between the municipality, community fundraising and government grants.
