Huron East Produces Its First Vintage

Huron County's first registered winery is now open for business.

Maelstrom Winery has produced red, white and rose wines, as well as blends and sparkling cider.

Nearly 10,000 vines are growing on 8 acres in Huron East, west of Seaforth.

Since 2009, owners Jim and Catherine Landsborough have succeeded in growing hybrid grape varieties that are cold-hardy, disease tolerant, and early ripening.  They have also incorporated some European vines, planted on a root stock that makes them hardier.

Maelstrom Winery and Cidery is open every Friday, Saturday and Sunday from 11am to 5pm at the farm west of Seaforth on Sanctuary Line, south off Hwy. 8.
