Stratford Students Help Nunavut High School Recover From Fire

The Avon Maitland District School Board and a teacher at Stratford Northwestern Secondary School have pitched in to help 150 secondary school students in Cape Dorset, Nunavut.

Communications Manager Wes MacVicar explains the students were only a couple of weeks into their school year when the school was burned to the ground on the evening of September 6.

On the morning of September 7, MacVicar says he got a call from Paul Finkelstein, a teacher who had arranged three or four students exchanges with students from Cape Dorset.

Within 30 minutes they had set up a Cape Dorest Education Fund to help replace some of the supplies that were lost in the fire.

It's still not known where the students will go to school this year but MacVicar says at least two of the Cape Dorset students who were in Stratford last year are now attending Stratford Northwestern.

MacVicar says donations to the Cape Dorset Nunavut Education Fund can be made online. Their goal is to raise $10,000 and they've already raised well over $2,000.
