Rental Scam Targets Meaford Home

A Meaford woman who listed her home for sale learned her property was being used as part of an online rental scam.

Grey County OPP says consumers searching for rentals contact the fraudsters through on line classified sites. The client is advised to send money to secure the rental.

The consumer eventually learns the property is not available to them, or sometimes, doesn't even exist

The Meaford resident who listed her home on for sale on MLS, was told by a friend that it was being listed for rent on a US site.

Grey County OPP caution residents to be aware of this type of scam and offer the following warning signs:

- Being offered a great deal on a rental property in a prime location through online classified ads. - Seller advises that they are currently out of the country and need the funds to be sent in advance. - Consumer is advised to send funds to a foreign country by using Western Union or Money Gram.
