The most recent student enrolment numbers for the Avon Maitland District School Board provided a bit of a surprise this year.
Director Ted Doherty explains they usually receive more elementary students than they expect, and that usually comes from kindergarten students.
Secondary school enrolment over the past few years tends to be slightly below estimates.
But Doherty says elementary numbers were below expectations, partly because they've lost a few students to a new private school in the Brussels area.
Doherty adds they're hoping some of those students can be convinced to come back to the Avon Maitland schools.
