MP Larry Miller says a re-elected Conservative government would purchase the house in Neustadt where John Diefenbaker was born.
He says the home would be operated as a National Historic Site by parks Canada similar to the way the William Lyon Mackenzie family home in Kitchener is operated .
Diefenbaker was born in the home at 144 Barbara St. on September 18, 1895.
The former prime minister lived there for eight years before the family moved to Saskatchewan.
Miller says the commitment will ensure the historic site is properly preserved and celebrated.
"John Diefenbaker made an enormous contribution to Canada,” says the prime minister. “Our government will ensure his contributions to our country are remembered and understood by future generations.”
Diefenbaker served in the House of Commons from 1940 until his death in 1979, winning 13 elections. He was Prime Minister of Canada between 1957 and 1963.
