Community Fund Set Up In South Huron

Local volunteers in South Huron have set up a community fund to help donors help the community.

Melanie Miller is the Chair of the Fund.

She explains they've teamed up with the Grand Bend Foundation in hopes of creating their own Foundation.

It will allow people to gift money or leave it in their wills to a fund that will earn interest that allows the foundation to support various causes in the community.

The fund will then disperse about 3.5 per cent of the capital every year to groups within the community.

Miller adds the Grand Bend Foundation was started with a $1.5- million dollar gift from the municipality from the sale of their PUC.   Since 2001, that has grown to just over $2.3-million and they've been able to give over one-million dollars in grants back to the community.

Miller adds donors can ask that their donation remain in their name and they have the option of specifying what type of organization they want to support with their donation.

They are following the model of the Community Foundations of Canada which has helped many communities set up their own Foundation.

Miller says the goal is to have a Foundation in every community across Canada.
