Owen Sound Looks to Solve Water Mystery

The City of Owen Sound hopes to solve a water usage mystery and prevent the possibility of a water main break.

The water control system has detected several high flow water usage events over the past month in the southeast corner of the city.

Public works says the flow rate during those events was equal to many hundreds of gallons a minute which is comparable to the way water gushes from a fire hydrant.

However patrols in the area south of 10th Street East and east of 8th Avenue East turned up no evidence of public water hydrant usage.

So the city suspects the source is a private hydrant, or building fire connection or internal usage at an industrial location.

The city wants to reduce the risk of water main breaks, and hopes to speak with the water user about how they can do that.

The events happened twice on September 10th, twice on September 11th, six times on September 15th and three times on September 22nd.
