Stratford Meeting Tomorrow For Syrian Refugee Fundraising

A public meeting in Stratford tomorrow night will consider the sponsorship of refugee families from Syria.

City council and Mayor Dan Mathieson  have partnered with the Stratford Festival to help raise the money to help several Syrian families settle in the community.

A steering committee is being organized involving interested residents and members of local Churches

The committee will help organize fundraising efforts to support the families when they arrive .

The Mennonite Central committee will open a gift registry for residents to make tax deductible donations.

The goal is $225,000. to help at least five families.

The meeting starts at 7pm tomorrow night at City Hall Auditorium.

“The Syrian refugee crisis has captured the hearts and minds of the people around the world, including here in Stratford, where many individuals and groups have stepped forward wanting to find the best way to help,” said Mayor Mathieson.

Sarnia police said the investigation began on May 29 after the victim was allegedly attacked by acquaintances at a residence near Tashmoo Avenue and Christopher Drive at Aamjiwnaang First Nation.
