Bluewater School Board Votes on the Future of Meaford Schools

A consultants report recommends closing Meaford Community School at the end of this school year. The Bluewater District School Board votes on that consultant’s report tonight. School trustee Linda Hamil says the board hired consultants last year to look at enrollment levels at its elementary and secondary schools.

In this report the consultants listed those elementary and secondary schools the Board should close because of declining enrolment. Among those schools listed was Meaford Community School.

It recommended that St. Vincent-Euphrasia Elementary School and Georgian Bay Secondary School remain open. At least for the next few years.

Children from Kindergarten to Grade 3 as well as those enrolled in French Immersion program would continue to attend St. Vincent-Euphrasia Elementary School.

Students in Grades 4 to 8 , would be transferred to Georgian Bay Secondary School at the end of the 2015-16 academic year. Hamill added however, the board doesn’t plan to close Meaford Community School just yet.

Hamill said that she and Bluewater board officials “ plan to hold meetings with local school councils and the public to get their comments and suggestions.”
