Guns And Cats Seized From Listowel Home

The smell was so bad that the Perth County OPP Crime Unit had to call in a HAZMAT Team to a house in Listowel.

While executing a public safety warrant for firearms at an Elma St. W residence Wednesday, officers were unable to enter certain parts of the home because of high levels of ammonia fumes.

The source of the fumes was the numerous feral cats that were kept in the home.

OPP HAZMAT technicians and members of the Ontario Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals entered the home Thursday and removed a large number of cats.   The search for firearms was completed after that.

Douglas Ballagh 69, and Ralph Roger Ballagh, 60, have both been charged with careless storage of a firearm.   They are to appear at the Ontario Court of Justice in Listowel on December 16.
