Huron County OPP says a quarter of the collisions investigated so far this year involve deer hits, with 31 occurring in the first ten days of November.
The OPP is urging motorists to take extra caution, pointing out the peak periods for deer collisions are October to January, and May to June. The force has conducted a deeper analysis of animal collisions, and identified "Hot Spots" throughout the county, where deer collisions seem to happen more often.
Those include Hwy. 8, near Front Rd., Pondsview Rd. or Holmes St.
Amberly Rd. near Brussels Line is a problem spot along with Brussels Line near Cranbrook Rd.
The OPP is reminding drivers not to veer for deer, because this can result in a loss of control, and leaving the roadway.
Unfortunately some animal collisions are completely unavoidable.
Stay calm and pull your vehicle off to the side of the road as far as possible. Activate your four-way flashers. Be visible and be aware of other vehicles when outside of your vehicle.
Call 911 if you or your passengers are injured. If nobody is injured and the dollar value of the damage exceeds $2,000, you are required to report the collision to police as soon as possible. Use the non-emergent line, 1-888-310-1122.
