Meaford Group Willing To Welcome Syrian Refugees

Meaford will have some help in its efforts to adopt a refugee family from Syria.

It's called the 'Meaford Refugee Welcome Group'. It's a grassroots collection of people that includes members of Christ Anglican Church. The group is also networking with similar refugee welcome groups in Grey and Bruce counties.

Group member Michael Anderson says their goal is to bring a Syrian family of up to six people to Meaford, support them for 12 months, and help them get on their feet.

Federal officials estimate the total cost of settling a family of six for a year is around $32,000. That includes start up costs for clothing, furniture and other supplies the family would need. The federal government will cover half the cost.

Anderson says the goal of the Meaford group is to raise $20,000 to $25,000.
