Committee Seeking Tax Break For Heritage Property Owners In Goderich

A member of Goderich's Heritage Committee has asked council to initiate a tax break for owners of heritage properties.

Bob Davis explains the request has actually been before council since July when he first presented his request.

That was sent back to the heritage committee in October and they re-worked it slightly and presented it go council again this week.

Davis points out at least 40 other municipalities, including Huron East, already provide a tax break for heritage properties.

He adds provincial legislation allows a break of up to 40 per cent and the committee is asking for half of that.

"The legislation allows anything between 10% and 40% of the property tax to be rebated back and we're asking for a 20% which is the same as Huron East. It's tied only to a completed project so it's not a general rebate," says Davis.

The tax break would only be on 50% of the cost of any renovations to the property and would only last as long as it took to have the project paid off.

Goderich Council has deferred a decision for four weeks.
