Meaford Military Base Prepares To Welcome Refugees

Although they don’t yet know how many refugees from Syria are coming, soldiers at the 4th Canadian Training Centre in Meaford are busily preparing for their arrival.

Training officer William Gaynor says soldiers at the military base near Meaford are putting up safety fencing, installing extra lighting and winterizing the buildings where the refugee families will live.

Captain Gaynor says he and other officers at the base are still waiting for more detailed instructions on when the refugees will be arriving and exactly how many to expect. But he wants the base ready to receive refugees if and when they do come to the Meaford area.

The Meaford base is one of six military bases across Canada where refugee families could be housed. The other five are at Borden, Kingston, Trenton, Petawawa and Valcartier, Quebec.
