Bruce Power Lining Up Long-Term Supplier Contracts

Bruce Power and BWXT Canada Ltd. signed a Memorandum of Understanding today to start the process for steam generator design and manufacturing.

The signing of the M.O.U. follows yesterday's announcement that Bruce Power will start a long-term, Major Component Replacement program.

Cambridge-based BWXT Canada has supplied all steam generators installed at the Bruce Nuclear Generating Station since the station went online in 1977.

The M.O.U. will address the supply of replacement steam generators for the four Bruce B Units, starting with Unit 6, which will go offline for refurbishment in 2020.

Each Bruce B Unit will require the manufacturing of eight steam generators as part of Bruce Power's life extension program.

The Major Component Replacement announcement paves the way for a long-term agreement for Laker Energy's facilities in Burlington and Oakville.

Bruce Power and Laker Energy Products have entered into an agreement to start the process to secure key long-lead reactor components; including end fittings, liners and feeder pipes.

The agreement will allow the process of procuring these components for the Unit 6 refurbishment, set to start in 2020, at a cost of between $25-million and $35-million.

The agreement could also lay the ground work for additional business for Laker for future refurbishments at Bruce Power over the next 20 years.
