Proper Protocols Followed For Chesley School Lockdown

The Bluewater District School Board's protocols for student safety were followed properly during a lockdown this week at a high school in Chesley.

The Chesley District Community School was under the lockdown on Wednesday after a report of a suspicious person near the school.

Superintendent of Education Alana Murray says the plans that were developed for this type of situation were followed by the administration at the school.

"They have to assess the immediate threat to students and staff. So based on the information they have available to them, they use their professional judgement and the other experiences that they have to make that call," says Murray. "They are required at every school to create a procedure for their own school based on the expectations within the board procedure and they work in consultation with emergency response partners."

Murray says the secure policies for schools are not available to the public, but are practiced on a regular basis by staff and students.
