Dangerous Drug in Owen Sound Identified

A drug that may be connected to the death of a man in Owen Sound this week has been identified.

Inspector Stephen MacKinnon of the Owen Sound Police Service says they have received the results on the analysis of two samples that were sent to Health Canada, and they came back as being the same drug -- Fentanyl.

The substances were from two locations where Owen Sound police responded to assist paramedics Monday at the scene of suspected overdoses.   A man from the first location, and a man and a woman from the second location were rushed to hospital by ambulances.

A 29-year-old man from the Meaford area was pronounced dead in hospital.   The other man and woman, both in their 20’s and from Owen Sound, survived.

Police are continuing their investigation but have determined that in at least one case, the person thought they were ingesting heroin.

"Fentanyl is a powerful opiate that when not taken as prescribed can potentially be lethal, but please let me be clear, we are not saying this is what caused the death of the young man.   We must wait for the toxicology results to be returned," said Inspector MacKinnon.
