With the late arrival of winter weather in Midwestern Ontario, snow plows are now out in full force, and the OPP warn that trying to pass a working snowplow can be extremely dangerous.
At any given time, plow operators are dealing with multiple tasks and can't always see another vehicle trying to get around them in bad weather, according to Grey County's Director of Transportation Mike Kelly.
"It can be extremely dangerous overtaking a plow while he's plowing; number one they're driving a large truck, number two they're trying to operate the plow and the side wing, and also putting material on the road as required along with having to observe everyone," says Kelly.
Kelly adds while plows do travel quite slowly, they do so for a reason; to ensure the roads are cleared properly and to make sure there is even coverage of materials like salt and sand on the road surface.
Kelly says another danger of overtaking an actively moving snowplow in bad weather is that a driver is pulling in to a road that is potentially not plowed and much slipperier .
The best place is behind the plow, according to the OPP.
