Strong Support For French Immersion Expansion In Huron-Perth

The Avon Maitland District School board released the results of its parent survey on French immersion.

The board currently offers French immersion in the Stratford area, and parents in other areas have requested French immersion for their children.

Superintendent Jane Morris says the surveys were sent out in December to the parents of all current and in-coming kindergarten children, and 178 were completed and returned.

Parents were asked in which of the high school communities they would like to see French immersion located.  The most popular was Clinton, and for the program to start in September.

Morris says the minimum for a viable grade one class is 20 students, but their experience in the Stratford area shows enrolment numbers can fluctuate from year to year.

The survey also asked parents if they would be willing to provide transportation to a French immersion school if it was not currently available.  55 per cent of respondents said they would not.
