Rising Price Of Food A Concern In Grey Bruce

The price of food is going up and that's a big cause for concern for public health officials.

Grey Bruce Associate Medical Officer of Health Dr. Christine Kennedy says surveys show the cost a basic nutritious food basket has risen 10 to 12 per cent in the last year.

"And that's concerning because it definitely does primarily impact individuals' access to nutritious food," says Kennedy.

She says an unhealthy diet causes all kinds of medical problems.

"It puts them at increased risk of chronic diseases such as the development of type two diabetes, of obesity and other chronic diseases."

As well as, but not limited to, heart disease and dental problems.

Kennedy says public health officials are working with the Grey Bruce Poverty Task Force to promote the availability of affordable, locally produced nutritious food.
