Midwestern Ontario Jobless Rate Holds Steady

The local unemployment rate for the Stratford to Bruce Peninsula area came in at 5.7%, steady from last month.

According to a release from the Four County Labour Market Planning Board, the region gained 2,200 positions since December, with gains in full time employment offsetting fewer part time jobs.

Service jobs accounted for the most gains locally, with 1,700 new jobs in wholesale and retail trade.

Utilities and Construction in the Goods-producing sector also gained 700 jobs, while manufacturing shed 1,100 jobs.

The region began the year with a 57% employment rate, and a 60% participation rate.

That compares to an employment rate of 60.5.% province wide, with a 64% participation rate.

Two men arrested in Tashmoo Ave. standoff

Sarnia police said the investigation began on May 29 after the victim was allegedly attacked by acquaintances at a residence near Tashmoo Avenue and Christopher Drive at Aamjiwnaang First Nation.
