Mayors in Southern Bruce County Object to Union Gas Open Houses

Three southern Bruce County municipalities call public open houses being held in their communities this week confusing and irresponsible.

The mayors of Kincardine, Arran-Elderslie and Huron-Kinloss want Union Gas to tell open house visitors that EPCOR has the franchise rights to distribute natural gas in the region.

Union Gas says it was been working on plans to expand natural gas in rural areas for three years.

District Manager Murray Costello says Union Gas has a hearing before the Ontario Energy board (OEB) in April to ask for a new regulatory approach to allow that expansion, including in Southern Bruce.

Union Gas is seeking approval from the OEB to run 300 kilometres of pipeline in the area at a cost of $88-million.

Union Gas hosts three Open Houses in the area this week, starting tonight in Chesley, tomorrow in Lucknow and Thursday in Kincardine .
