Kincardine Considers Safety Upgrades At Station Beach

Kincardine is reviewing safety practices after losing the Station Beach Blue Flag designation for 2016.

The International Jury says the municipality can earn candidate status for this year if it works toward recommendations outlined in the Lifesaving Society's safety audit.

Suggestions include improved emergency signage, regular inspections, public education, established emergency procedures and safety patrols.

The audit also recommends 250 m of beach next to the south and north pier be designated no swimming due to strong currents.

It recommends a clearly designated safe swimming area, and a lifesaving station on each pier.

Four people have drowned at Station Beach over the past seven years, including a 16-year-old Goderich youth last August.

Options to limit vehicular access to the piers will also be considered.

Environmental Defence, and the Lifesaving Society will work with the town to mitigate drowning risks at the beach.

The jury did acknowledge the significant improvement in water quality at the beach, and commends the municipality for strong environmental initiatives.

Council will consider the recommendations March 16.
