27 Charged In Perth County For Distracted Driving

More than two dozen drivers in Perth County have learned an expensive lesson about using an electronic device while driving.

During the week-long OPP Distracted Driving Campaign, officers in Perth County issued tickets to 27 drivers for texting or talking on a cell phone while driving.

Each driver received a $490 ticket, and upon conviction will see three demerit points added to their licence.

One motorist was also charged with careless driving during the campaign.

Numerous studies confirm that this behaviour is as dangerous as driving while impaired by alcohol or drugs.

In a news release, Inspector Rob Scott, the Perth County OPP Detachment Commander stated, "It is difficult to understand why these texts, calls or messages have to be answered while operating motor vehicles.   When behind the wheel, attention should be on the task at hand which is driving. It is my hope that this campaign and our Easter Long Weekend Spring Seat Belt Campaign will create greater road safety awareness".
