Ag-Park Upgrades A Hot Topic In Goderich

The cost of upgrading the Agricultural Park continues to be a hot topic at Goderich Council.

But CAO Larry McCabe says the Maitland Recreation Centre was a much bigger project, and that eventually included an expansion of the library.

McCabe says that project was over $21-million, and Goderich residents responded to an aggressive fund-raising effort with the rest built in to the budget.

The Rec Centre was opened in 2004 and paid off in 2011, and McCabe believes the same would happen with the Agricultural Park renovations.

McCabe says the renovations would follow the same process in that council would have to review the cost, assess the need and determine whether it was a priority or not. If it is, council would then have to strategize as far as raising the money.

"Every project goes into the planning stage; first it becomes the priority of council, then it comes into a planning stage, staff put together some figures and projections and then council makes a decision on it so it's the same process as normal," says McCabe.

At this point the very preliminary estimate for the Agricultural Park upgrades is about $3.7-million.
