Meaford Names Park After Governor General

Meaford plans to honour Canada’s 28th Governor General by naming a park after him.

Council voted unanimously this week to approve a resolution put forward by Mayor Barbara Clumpus.

The mayor’s resolution calls for a park area next to the Meaford Coast Guard Station to be named "David Johnston Park."

Mayor Clumpus listed the many offices and honours Johnston holds as Canada’s Governor General. These include being the Queen’s representative in Canada and therefore the Commander in Chief of Canada’s Armed Forces.

He is also head of Canada’s Heraldic Authority, and will be visiting Meaford this spring to present the municipality with its coat of arms.

David Johnston also serves as the honourary chief commander of the Canadian Coast Guard.
