Southgate Makes Pledge Toward New Hospital In Markdale

Southgate council has confirmed its $400,000 pledge to the new Markdale Hospital.

The project has been on the go since 2002, and it will still be 2018 at the earliest before construction starts.

Several Southgate councillors expressed concerns that the new hospital would have fewer beds, compared to the present Markdale Hospital.

Grey Bruce Health Care CEO Lance Thurston told council that the province calls the shots on new hospitals.

Councillor Dale Pallister questioned the escalating cost of the hospital. He said the project started out more than a decade ago at $30-million, and has now blossomed to $67-million.

He advised hospital fundraisers to nail down the final cost before going to the public for more donations.
