Black Bear In Central Huron Tuesday

A black bear was spotted Tuesday in Central Huron.  The bear was on Maitland Line, along the Maitland River Valley Trail.

Animal Control Officer Bob Trick says the bear came up onto one person's deck and then wandered over to a neighbour's deck and destroyed a bird feeder.

Trick adds the bear didn't run away when one of the homeowners came out, and seemed to be more comfortable around humans than a bear in the wild, and that's a bit of a concern.

He says there's a small golf course as well as trails in that area and it would not be good if someone stumbled upon a hungry bear.

Trick suggests bears are particularly hungry because it's been such a cold spring that the usual sources of food aren't around yet.  He adds a bear that's hungry will go wherever food is likely to be available, and if there is no food the bear will move on.
