Special Pump Needs Replacing In West Perth

The Ausable Bayfield Conservation Authority is going to have to replace a special pump they use to test ground water in the former Hibbert Township in West Perth.

Water and Planning Manager Alec Scott explains there are some sink holes in that area that pose a risk to the ground water. Scott says most of the sink holes are just a small depression in the ground but a few are big enough that a stream can be drawn into the sink hole and carried to the ground water table.

Scott explains one particular sink hole is about 300 feet deep and a special pump is used to draw water up once every year so the ground water can be tested.

That pump has been in the ground for seven or eight years now and has quit so a new one has to be installed.

Scott says that means hauling up all of the pipes, replacing the pump and putting back down the sink hole.
