Area Code 548 will be assigned to new telephone numbers in the 519 region.
The 226 area code was added to the region in 2006.
Higher demand for communications services prompted the need for the latest area code, as telephone numbers starting with either 519 or 226 are running out.
The region served by these area codes stretches from Windsor, to Brantford to Tobermory.
People in southern Huron and Lambton counties are being told to limit their time outside.
