No Injuries in Owen Sound Apartment Building Fire

It was a busy end to the Canada Day long weekend for Owen Sound fire fighters.

Crews were called to an apartment complex on 5th Avenue East just after 6am on Monday to find smoke and flames billowing from the roof area of the 5 unit building.

While the fire was quickly contained to the point of origin in the roof of a rear apartment, one fire official told CKNX News that it could have been worse due to the nature of the building's construction.

"It could have been really extensive because it was a balloon construction but we were able to contain it," says Fire Captain Wayne Flood.

While all of the building's residents were able to make it out safely, one elderly woman was taken to hospital as a precaution, treated and later released.

While the fire is not deemed to be suspicious, fire investigators did notify the Ontario Fire Marshall's Office because a resident was taken to hospital.

Total damage to the building is estimated at approximately $25,000.
