Kincardine Doctor Celebrates 50 years Of Practice

A Kincardine doctor is marking 50 years of practicing medicine in the community.

Dr. Gary Gurbin was honoured by the South Bruce Grey Health Centre for his five decades of service, which began when he arrived in July of 1966.

He says it has been a fulfilling career, adding Kincardine has been the ideal community for him to achieve his career goals.

"I have always, I think, got more than I've given around here because it's just ideal for what I wanted to try to do with my life," says Gurbin. "So it's worked out really, really well for me and I hope for the community, as well."

Gurbin says the biggest change in health care in his 50 years has been the advancement of the universal health care system, pointing to the Canada Health Act of 1984, which he helped implement during his nine years in federal politics as the MP for Bruce-Grey from 1979 until 1988.

As for whether retirement is in his plans, Gurbin says he has committed to staying on for at least one more year, adding he reevaluates his career on a year-by-year basis at this point, and says he would much rather be at work than bored at home.
