Grandparents and Grandkids Get Active Together

A new program at the Edge of Walton is bringing kids and their grand parents together to reduce obesity.

Jay McFarlan says he realized some time ago that the best way to address the obesity problem that exists throughout North America is to give people an 'exercise buddy'.

So he invited grand parents and their grand children to come out to the Edge of Walton and take part in activities together. McFarlan explains he's not asking them to do anything terribly strenuous, but activity of any kind is a step in the right direction.

This is the second year of the one-week program and he asked participants to complete surveys after last year.   He found that six months later, grand parents had increased their activity level by 25 per cent.

This year they also introduced a nutritional component into the program because that can be even more important than exercise.

McFarlan doesn't have dates for next year's camp but it will be for one week in July. More information about the camp can be found on the grandsparks.ca web site.
