MPP Calls On Government To Address Development Disabilities Crisis

Perth-Wellington MPP Randy Pettapiece says a crisis involving adults with developmental disabilities needs to be immediately addressed.

He says the province must immediately accept the 60 recommendations outlined in the Ombudsman's report released yesterday.

"It should not take an Ombudsman’s report to spur this government into action," says Pettapiece. "This government has known about these problems for years."

He says other families are languishing on waiting lists as the crisis develops.

Pettapiece serves as opposition critic to the Minister of Community and Social Services and regularly hears from families on the brink of crisis.

He says in many cases a child turns 18 and support is cut off, or parents have to give up custody of a child in order to get support.

Pettapiece says individuals with developmental disabilities are living in hospitals, long term care homes or even jails because the government will not take responsibility for housing.
