Afghanistan Veterans Monument To Be Unveiled In Goderich

The Goderich Legion will unveil a monument this Saturday to honour Canadian Veterans who served in Afghanistan.

Monument project Co-Chair Paul Thorne explains they were able to obtain a light armoured vehicle through the Afghanistan Community Monument program, but there was some fund-raising involved to cover the cost of re-furbishing the LAV, which included cleaning up, de-militarizing, painting and welding. There were some engineering costs related to the pedestal it was to be mounted on.

They chose a rough terrain design that looks like the vehicle is climbing rocks very similar to those found in Afghanistan.

Thorne says there will be a parade that leaves the St. George Anglican Church on Nelson St. shortly after 1pm Saturday afternoon, and it will arrive at the dedication site at the Huron County Museum. The dedication ceremony will start at 1:30pm.

Thorne adds the Lieutenant Governor of Ontario, the Honourable Elizabeth Dowdeswell will attend the dedication.
