Unprecedented flooding has prompted a state of emergency at The Chippewas of Nawash Unceded First Nation near Wiarton.
Chief Gregory Nadjiwon says roads workers have been doing everything they can after a major rainfall this week turned roads to rivers.
He says they are still adding up the cost of the extensive damage. He says 90% of roads were damaged, and up to 50% of properties.
"It was tons of gravel that got washed away. It created ruts of about 2 feet deep and probably a foot wide." he explains. "In a matter of four hours, it actually created what appeared to be rivers going through the village. We've actually had some of the elders say they have never ever seen anything like it."
He adds up to 50% of residents also experienced flooding, and engineers are going door to door to assess the structural integrity of the properties.
The band declared an emergency yesterday and Indian and Northern Affairs Canada quickly authorized any spending necessary to repair the roads, and flooded properties.
