Palmerston Dog Declared 'Dangerous'

Minto council had to make a tough call on declaring a Palmerston German Shepherd cross as a "dangerous dog."

The dog recently ran across a street and in an unprovoked attack, and attacked a shih tzu, causing injuries which led to its death.  Several councillors were concerned that a similar attack might be directed at a child.

Mayor George Bridge says it was not an easy decision for council, and the situation is particularly difficult for both pet owners.

Council upheld the designation Tuesday after hearing an appeal by the owner of the offending dog.

The owner will be required to carry $1-million liability insurance, keep the dog muzzled in public and confined at home, have it micro chipped, and post her property with a sign warning of a dangerous dog.
