Sleep-Out In Mitchell To Address Youth Homelessness

Perth County OPP are conducting a sleep-out in front of the West Perth detachment tonight to raise awareness of youth homelessness.

Participants will build shelters using large cardboard boxes, or sleep on picnic tables while trying to stay warm.

They'll be collecting canned goods, clothing, and cash for the West Perth Youth Centre. Residents can join in, or just stop by for refreshments.

The event was inspired by a former homeless youth, Joe Roberts, who was helped off the streets by a caring OPP officer, and became a successful entrepreneur.

The event runs from 6pm until midnight at 132 George St. in Mitchell.

“This “sleep-out” event has been organized to raise awareness about youth homelessness, which is not just a big city problem. It occurs in Perth County, and our officers have seen how devastating the effects can be on them. By not having a permanent home, or as they couch surf, these young people face great risks and are much more vulnerable," says West Perth Sergeant Manny Coelho.
