New Development Charges Coming In Bluewater

The Municipality of Bluewater has announced its proposed new development charges.

Several residents at Monday night's council meeting expressed concerns that a $9,200 fee would discourage development.

A spokesperson for the Bluewater Builders Association called it a "new neighbour tax," but admits an argument can be made for charging newcomers for the infrastructure they need rather than raising general property taxes.

John Meinen urged council to move slowly and phase the development charges in. His concern is that if they move too quickly, they'll kill development in the municipality.

Bluewater council agreed to extend the public consultation period for an extra month to get more information, so it won't be possible to implement the development charges until mid-March.
