The Avon Maitland District School Board started a repair and replacement process of all the glass used in its schools about year ago because of safety concerns.
Corporate Services Superintendent Janet Baird-Jackson explains it was triggered by issues with polished wire glass, which was used because it holds the glass together in the event of a fire or in other situations.
But was found to cause serious injuries to anyone who put their arm through the glass.
Baird-Jackson says they are now putting a laminate safety film on display cases. As well, mirrors have been replaced with a finished edge and exterior doors with wire glass are being replaced as funding becomes available due to the cost.
She adds they're also putting the laminate safety film on all interior doors with the wired glass.
Baird-Jackson explains the entire process depends on funding but they'll working on the film on interior doors until that's completed and they have tendered for the exterior door units. Several of them will be done this summer.
Baird-Jackson adds they're more concerned about the interior wire glass doors because they're are more of them and so they're making sure they're all of them covered with the safety film. She says they're also focusing on supervision as students move through the halls.
