Central Huron Mayor Jim Ginn says the vote at Monday night's meeting to stay with the ward system really doesn't change much for the next election.
Ginn explains the discussion around going to an at-large system or staying with the ward system started after the last election when councillors realized a candidate didn't have to run in the ward in which they lived.
As long as the individual lived in Central Huron, he/she could run in any of the three wards.
Ginn says that, in effect, made the ward system redundant and meant residents would not necessarily have someone from their ward representing them at council.
Council voted Monday to keep the ward system but Ginn points out it's still not much different from an at-large system.
There was also some discussion about a referendum at Monday's meeting, but Ginn says he agrees with Deputy Mayor Dave Jewitt that councillors are elected and paid to make decisions and shouldn't have to resort to a referendum to resolve a contentious issue.
