Hanover Council has caused a bit of a stir among local taxpayers, as they voted 4-3 in favour of installing a full benefits package for council members.
Councillor Steve Fitzsimmons voted against the proposed package, and says it's irresponsible to the local tax payers.
"I don't support this irresponsible way to use taxpayer money. In the face of making significant cuts to parks and rec, and also getting rid of free dump passes for residents, and other measures to save money," he says. "Personally I will be opting out of this program immediately, and I just feel taxpayers deserve better than this decision."
Fitzsimmons was joined by Peter Hambly and Ed King in voting against the package that could cost over $32,000 if every member opts in. Fitzsimmons says he has already heard complaints from a number of the townsfolk.
"Well they're very angry and they think it's irresponsible of our council to vote themselves benefits in the face of a bunch of significant cuts to a number of departments, and various looks at trying to save money in a number of ways," says Fitzsimmons. "I just feel this isn't the way to go about making a decision like this."
For the first time during the current council term, a recorded vote was requested after a town staff report was presented on the costs of the benefits program. Mayor Sue Patterson broke the 3-3 tie and voted for the proposal.
